Watervliet hosted New Buffalo for a first round district game on Monday night. The Lady Panthers started slow, falling behind 14-8 against a scrappy and determined Lady Bison team. However, Elaine Koshar entered the game and flipped the momentum for the Panthers. Koshar scored 5 points in a two minute span, grabbing offensive rebounds and diving on the floor for loose balls, which led to extra possessions for Watervliet. Koshar continued that effort all game and finished with a career high 13 points and 9 rebounds.
The Panthers did a good job passing the ball inside the first half, with Ariana Rowe and Koshar finishing on most of them. Rowe scored a game high 19 points and grabbed 9 rebounds. Once the New Buffalo defense started collapsing down low, the Watervliet posts kicked the ball outside to Jaelyn Pitre, who knocked down 3 three point shots. Pitre finished with 9 points.
The Lady Panthers played great half court, pressure defense the last 3 quarters, which led to several steals and easy points. Everyone on the bench that came in the game played tough, aggressive defense, diving on the floor and creating turnovers.
The Lady Panthers advance to the second round of district play, where they will face the district favorite Brandywine. Game time is at 6pm at Brandywine.
