On a very cold and raining night in South Haven, the boys soccer team played their first ever District Playoff game in the history of the school against the #1 seed South Haven Rams. In a game that was incredibly exciting, fast paced despite the conditions and down to the wire, Watervliet fell 1-0. The boys left everything on the field and both teams knew it.
South Haven scored early in the 5th minute of the game. Kind of a fluke goal that just skipped into the corner. There was even controversy over whether or not the goal went in. The goal counted and South Haven had the early lead. And that was the only score of the game. 75 more minutes of up ad down action, some nice saves by both keepers, some awesome defensive play by both sides but no more goals.
South Haven is a traditional power house and has won several State Championships in soccer. After the game, their coach told us that the Watervliet soccer team has something special going on and couldn’t believe we were that good for a first year program. The South Haven AD came to us and said he wants to schedule us next year because of how competitive our team was. These are both great compliments to what the Watervliet Boys have accomplished this year in terms of play and heart. We coaches could not be any prouder of the team and the boys.
In the final post of the 2019 season, I (Coach Doug) would like to thank both MacKenzie Houlehen and Tom Isbrecht for all their hard work and dedication as assistant coaches this year. They were invaluable.
I would also like to say a special thanks to Ken Dietz for all his help in support as AD in getting approval for our soccer team and supporting us all year with anything we needed. Thanks Ken…
Looking forward to great things in 2020 and beyond…..
