Meet Recap

The Panther runners grabbed 6th place out of 16 teams at the Regional Meet and will be one of only 6 teams from the region sending a runner to next Saturday’s State Meet. Gus Hinch, seeded 23rd going into the race, qualified for State by capturing 11th place overall. Gus executed his race strategy perfectly as he attacked the hilly and muddy course early and got himself in the pack of frontrunners where he would remain for the rest of the race. Ezra Troyer put together his finest race of the season as he surpassed his 25th-place seeding by finishing 19th and just a few spots from joining Gus at the State Meet. Kody Edmonds did not let a nagging knee issue keep him from helping the team’s cause grabbing 33rd. Senior Nick Swanson finished his Watervliet cross career by doing what he has always done – giving his best effort no matter what the circumstances. Nick finished in 39th place as he sloshed through 3 miles of the most wintry mix Michigan had to offer. Coach Weber would like to thank Nick for the many positive contributions he has made to the cross program both on the course and off. With 2 freshmen and 4 sophomores making up this year’s regional line-up, the future looks very promising for Panther Boys Cross Country.
Like Nick, Senior Alyssa Hobson wrapped up her high school cross career. It was her third time traversing the Red Bud course and she made it her best time clocking in just over the 25-minute mark. This was Alyssa’s best season from start to finish. Over the course of 4 years and 39 races, she has set a great example with her high levels of positivity and hard work.

Game Recap

The Panthers welcomed the Schoolcraft Eagles to Panther stadium for a first round playoff game Friday night. The game was a rematch of a week 8 showdown that Watervliet won 36-14.

The Watervliet defense set the tone for the night on the opening Eagle possession, forcing a quick 3 and out and punt. The offense took little time as Senior QB Zack Pickens went untouched on the first offensive play for a 65 yard TD burst to give the home team the early lead. The defense continued to make it tough sledding for the Schoolcraft offense allowing the offense to punch in another TD in the first quarter, another Pickens scamper, this time from 40 yards. The Panthers O twice more drove inside the Eagle 20, but failed to come away with any points. Meanwhile the defense pitched a first half shutout to help pace the home team to a 14-0 halftime lead.

Watervliet took little time in the third quarter to add to their lead. Pickens hit junior WR Garrett Matthews for a quick 50 yard strike. Two plays later Pickens found senior WR Bryant Kieft in the back of the end zone for a 20 yard TD strike . After the 2 pt. play the Panthers took a 22-0 lead. Later in the quarter Pickens again went up top, this time to senior WR Trent Boone, for a pretty 40 yard TD pitch and catch. The offense then hit the ground in the fourth quarter, grinding out much of the clock on a 85 yard TD drive that was 100% runs. Senior RB James Bell capped off the drive with an 8 yard TD plunge to finish the scoring at 36-0.

The story of the night was the defense. The Panthers not only shutout the Eagles, but held them to just 150 yards of offense on the night (45 of which came on one play). The linebacker crew of Ryan Chisek, Anthony Wade, Bryant Kieft, and Lamarrius Smith played particularly well in shutting down the Eagle option attack.

Offensively the Panthers rolled up 425 yards on the night. Pickens was 7/17 passing for 151 yards and 2 TD passes. Pickens also led the ground attack with 26 carries for 178 yards and two more TD’s. Worth noting is the 151 passing yards put Pickens over 3000 yards passing on the season, the first Panther QB to ever surpass that number. Garrett Matthews led the receiving corps with 4 catches for 110 yards.

The Panthers (10-0) move on to round two to face another familiar opponent as Delton-Kellogg (6-4) makes the trip to Panther Stadium. Game is set for next Friday, November 3rd at 7:00 pm.

Game Recap

The Panthers finished their season in South Haven tonight with a quad against 3 tough teams. They started with Vicksburg, who was the best team in the gym. A slow start in game one put the Panthers behind, and even a run of serves by Susanna VanLente couldn’t put Vicksburg in reach. The second game got off to a much better start, and the Panthers started to show that they could handle the pace Vicksburg was setting. 6 serves by Serena Reyna evened the score at 17, but they were unable to finish and fell 20-25.

Match 2 pitted the Panthers against South Haven. We haven’t seen them since the first week of the season, and the team was determined to show how much they had improved. The first game was a back and forth battle, with Tekoa Marshall serving 5 points to give the Panthers a small lead. Ultimately the Rams won 20-25. In game 2, one great server shook the Panthers confidence and they were never able to recover, falling 5-25.

The final match of the night was a rematch with Saugatuck. The team was determined to beat the Indians again. They proved that determination when they fell behind 16-21, and battled back to 23-21 behind some great serving by Serena Reyna. The team dug in, and won 25-23. In Game 2, it was Abbi Roberts who went on a serving run, but it wasn’t quite enough as the Panthers fell 23-25. Determined to win, the team never made it through a full rotation as tough serving from Tekoa, Maddie Wilkinson and Serena Reyna kept the Indians off balance and gave the Panthers the win 15-11.

It was great way to end the season, and to show how much these girls have learned and improved. Congratulations on a fantastic season ladies!
