Game Recap

The 7th Grade Maroon basketball team opened their season against a very athletic NIles team. The first quarter was a defensive battle, both teams dealing with the first game gitters. By the half the Panthers opened up a nice lead sparked by their good half court defense and some nice execution on the offensive end. The third and fourth quarters were simply a battle. Niles made a run and cut the lead to one late, but the Panthers came up big some some key stops at the end of the game on defense and executed a huge side out of bounds play with under 30 seconds to play to seal the victory. Great job PANTHERS!!

Game Recap

The Watervliet Panthers welcomed the Panthers of Delton-Kellogg to Panther stadium this past Friday for a second round playoff tussle. This was the second meeting of the season between the two schools, with the first being Watervliet’s closes game of the year (a 14 point road victory). The second one would prove to be every bit as tough.

The game started the way the home team would have hoped. The defense forced a 3 and out and the offense quickly drove the field for an opening TD (with 2-pt conversion) to take the early lead. DK would not go quietly however, answering with a TD of their own on the next possession. The Panthers of Watervliet added three more first half TD’s (all through the air) and threatened to pull away midway through the second quarter, but a costly fumble allowed DK to nearly match the Watervliet scoring output. After a big stop just before the half the home team held a slim 30-29 halftime advantage.

After receiving the second half kickoff Watervliet was once again deep in DK territory when they put the ball on the ground once again. DK promptly put together a drive of their own marching to the Panther 15. On first down from the 15, DK ran off tackle for looked to be a good gain, but senior LB Anthony Wade ripped the ball from the ball carriers hands and headed 91 yards the other way for an improbable Watervliet TD. After converting the 2 pt. play Watervliet was now up 9 points. The Panther offense, which only stopped itself with the two fumbles, took control of the game giving Watervliet an 18 point lead early in the 4th quarter. While the lead was comfortable and Watervliet in control from that point on, DK was able to add a TD late in game to cut the lead to 8, but with just 11 seconds left it was too little too late. The Panthers had secured a high scoring 58-50 victory.

Senior QB Zack Pickens added to what has already been a historic season by going 16/17 for 399 yards and 6 TD passes. For good measure Pickens added 106 rushing yards and a TD on 20 carries. Senior WR Bryant Kieft also added to his historic year by grabbing 9 Pickens offerings for 242 yards and two trips to pay dirt. The big night gave Kieft 1550 receiving yards on the season, setting a new mark for most receiving yards in a single season for a Panther receiver. Trent Boone also had a big night catching 2 passes for 92 yards and a TD. Junior WR’s Garrett Matthews and Jakob Aldrich each added TD receptions as well.

The win gave Watervliet its third District Chapionship since 2011 and moved the Panthers to 11-0 on the season. The 2017 team became only the second Watervliet squad ever to win 11 games in a season. They will try for a 12th win next week as they host defending state champion Jackson Lumen Christi (9-1). Day and time are TBD.

Game Recap

First round of District play Watervliet took on Cassopolis. Both teams battled point for point all four games and both teams came ready to play! The Panthers fell short of the match win ending their ‘2017 season.

Three seniors represented Watervliet one more time and leaving a volleyball legacy. Seniors, Jaelyn Pitre had 39 assist, 3 kills and 7 digs, Kara had 10 kills, led with 4 blocks and 1 dig, Zoe Smith had a personal record of 22 kills in one match, 2 aces and 14 digs. A special thank you to our Panther Seniors.

There was a lot of tough defense and effective offensive plays executed by the Panthers. Every team member was completely engaged in the match and kept the energy up throughout the match. Though the Panthers did not advance in District play every athlete made great personal gains and had a season to be proud of.
