The Watervliet Girls Soccer team traveled to neighboring school Hartford for the first round of District play this Thursday afternoon. The Panthers came out on the forefront and showcased excellent passing and ball possession against the Hartford Huskies. The team controlled the tempo and made it difficult for the hosts to play their game. The freshmen midfield duo of Stephany Villarreal and Alex Zuniga, delivered one of their best performances of the season, as they battled tough in the offensive and defensive side of the pitch. Despite having possession of the ball for most of the first half, an error in transition would allow the Huskies to get on the scoreboard first. In the second half the team continued to push and battle hard in all facets of the match. The team held the Huskies to a few opportunities on goal. Freshman Andrea Ortega had her best performance of the year and made it hard for the Husky offense to get by her. A couple missed clearances in defense would allow the hosts to get their second and third goal of the game. Even the result didn’t go in our favor, the team played tough from start to finish, especially with the youth of this group. The girls moved the ball with confidence, communicated well on the field, and competed with intensity the entire match. Their effort, teamwork, and determination were on full display, and this young team will continue to grow for the future. Thank you to all the parents, athletes and community members for a great season.
