After a crazy year not knowing if we would have a season or not, the boys of Watervliet finally started their season tonight at home. In the first game of the season, a conference game against Parchment, Watervliet came out firing and recorded a 10-2 win to start the season off on the right foot.
At the 6 minute mark, for the second time in two years, Brennan Bornas scored the first goal of the season for the Panthers off a nice feed from Alex Mejia. You could feel the relief with the boys that they were finally playing and ready for the season.
Nathan Isbrecht then completed a natural hat trick, scoring in the 14th(from Brady Bornas), 17th (from Brennan Bornas), and 25th (from Alex Mejia) minutes for a 4-0 lead. Parchment scored a late goal off a weird bounce and the halftime score was 4-1.
The defense of Andrew Chisek, Austin Wilmoth, Erick Perez, Ziki Alvarado, Drew Van Lente and Dominick Mandujano played strong all night, keeping shots away from keeper Zach Hastings and getting the ball up the the midfield to make plays. Erick and Andrew both played very strong games to lead this bunch to a strong showing and paving the way for our forwards the light up the scoreboard.
In the 2nd half, Brady scored in the 50th minute from Nathan and Alex, in the 54th minute, Alex Mejia scored his first goal of the season in the 62nd minute and Nathan tallied 3 more in the 50th, 59th and 68 minutes to open the season with an incredible 6 goals. Andrew Chisek, Erick Perez and Brennan all had assists in the second half.
A good way to start the season for sure, our next game is Saturday morning, 10 am in Bridgman.
