Game Recap

The Panthers took their second straight long road trip on Friday, this time to face the Falcons of Constantine. It was homecoming in Constantine meaning Watervliet was playing in their third straight homecoming game (their own, Delton-Kellogg’s, and now Constantine). The offense was rolling early and often. After a nice return on the opening kickoff senior QB Zack Pickens hit junior WR Garrett Matthews for a 52 yard gain then took it in himself on the next play from 8 yards out. After a defensive stop the Panthers quickly scored again to take an early 16-0 lead.

Constantine, a program who has had at least 6 wins for 27 years straight would not go down easily, fighting hard for four first half TD’s. However, the Panther offense could not be stopped, scoring on all seven of their first half possessions and converting all seven two-point plays to take a 56-24 halftime lead.

The second half saw the defense get a stop on the first Falcon possession and the offense once again punched it in to get the running clock started. The Panthers punched it in one more time to make the final 68-24.

Defensively, Garrett Matthews led the way with six tackles, two of which were for a loss. Trent Boone also had a couple of big pass break ups to help pace the defense.

Offensively the Panthers continued to put up big numbers. Senior QB Zack Pickens continued his season for the ages. Pickens was 13/18 passing for 312 yards and 4 TD’s. Pickens also rushed 18 times for 206 yards and 5 TD’s. Picken’s top target on the night was once again Bryant Kieft, who is also having a monster offensive season. Kieft had 7 grabs for 180 yards and two TD’s. Garrett Matthews also had two catches for 92 yards and a TD. Senior RB James Bell had a break out game as well, trucking it 13 times for 101 yards.

The Panthers (7-0, 3-0) face another stiff road test next week as the head to Schoolcraft (5-2, 2-1) to face the Eagles. A win would guarantee Watervliet at least a share of the Division title. Game time is set for 7:00.
