Game Recap

It was Panthers vs. Panthers Friday night as your Watervliet Panthers took the long road trip to face the Panthers of Delton-Kellogg for a division battle. A battle is exactly what it turned out to be. The two teams traded scores in the first half, with Delton hitting some quick throws over the top and the Panthers air attack moving the ball up and down the field. A critical onside recovery by Watervliet helped ensure a 30-30 halftime score.

Delton-Kellogg surprised the visitors by coming out with a lot more wing-t offense than they were expecting or had practiced for. Defensive Coordinator Chris Prom along with JV coach Josh Tremblay made some critical halftime adjustments to the defensive scheme that led to multiple 2nd half stops including a critical forced fumble and recovery. The players, to their credit, were able to make the adjustments on the fly and get some crucial second half stops. None bigger than a screen pass that the defense forced out earlier than the Delton QB wanted and went backwards which was then recovered by Zack Pickens. Meanwhile the offense was potent once again, scoring four more second half TD’s on their way to 58 points and a 58-44 win.

Leading the way of offense was QB Zack Pickens and WR Bryant Kieft. Pickens continued to put up video game like numbers going 24/30 for 398 yards and 5 TD’s through the air, while also rushing 21 times for 103 yards and 3 TD’s. Kieft was just as spectacular, grabbing 14 Pickens offerings for 303 yards and two TD’s. It was one of the great wide receiver performances in school history.

Watervliet (6-0, 2-0) will take to the road again next week as they travel to perennial power Constantine (3-3, 0-2). Game time is set for 7:00.
