Game Recap

Homecoming 2017 did not disappoint as undefeated Kalamazoo United came calling to play the undefeated Panthers. With one of the largest crowds in recent memory in attendance the Panthers were able to play with the lead for most of the game on their way to a hard fought 52-34 victory.

The game started out just as the home team wanted. The defense forced a three and out and the offense marched down the field for an opening drive TD. Kalamazoo United answered back with a TD drive of their own, but the Watervliet offense came right back with another score to finish the first quarter up 14-6. Early in the second quarter senior DT James Bell engulfed a United pass attempt, then returned it 44 yards to pay dirt. Each team scored another TD before the half giving the Panthers a 28-14 halftime lead.

Watervliet received the second half kickoff and proceeded to march down the field for another TD to open up a three TD lead. However, Kalamazoo United would not go away. Every time it appeared the Panthers were about to put the nail in the coffin United fought back into the game. After a big third quarter the Titans had trimmed the lead to 44-34. However, Senior Lamarrius Smith had a big interception and the offense took advantage getting the TD and the two point conversion to go up 18 and essentially put the game out of reach.

The defense, which had a few issues on the night, but also had some big stops and two interceptions, did hold the high powered Titan offense to 302 yards, while the Panther offense racked up 645 yards of total offense. Senior QB Zack Pickens played great yet again. Pickens was 26/39 for 467 yards and a pair of TD passes. Pickens also led the rushing attack with 26 carries for 134 yards and two more TD’s. Three Panther receivers went for over 100 yards on the night. Junior Garrett Matthews had seven grabs for 119 yards, and Trent Boone snagged six Pickens offerings for 108 yards and a TD. Senior Bryant Kieft led all receivers with 7 catches for 203 yards and a TD. Kieft also rushed 8 times for 46 yards and 2 more TD’s.

With the win the Panthers moved to 5-0 (1-0 SAC Valley) on the season. Worth noting was the presence of the Fox 17 Friday NIght Blitz crew who made tonight’s game their game of the week. It was a first to have them do the show from Panther Stadium.

The Panthers begin a three game road trip next week with a trip to Delton Kellogg (2-3, 0-1) next Friday. Kickoff is set for 7:00.
