Glen Lake High School
Watervliet High School
The Panthers welcomed an unfamiliar foe to Panther Stadium tonight. Maple City Glen Lake made the 4 hour trip from Northern Michigan to play a JV/Varsity double header. The Lakers are coming off a banner season in which they reached the State Championship game (falling to Jackson Lumen Christi 26-14). With a good number of players back from that team the game figured to be a nice early season test of how good this Panther team is.
Watervliet took the opening kickoff of the game and proceeded to drive down the field for a touchdown. The drive included a 4th and 13 conversion on a pass from senior QB Zack Pickens to Junior WR Garrett Matthews. However, Glen Lake answered right back with a long TD drive of their own. After the conversion the score was tied 8-8. However, from that point the home team took over. The Panthers proceeded to score 30 unanswered points to take a 38-8 lead. Glen Lake was able to put together another TD drive just before the half to cut the lead to 38-14 at halftime.
The Lakers received the ball to start the second half, but the Panther defense proved up to the task getting a big stop to keep the visitors from getting back into the game. The offense then picked up right where it left off in the first half jamming the ball back into the end zone to extend the lead to 46-14. From that point the game slowed down a bit with with the Panthers scoring another score and Glen Lake adding two. The final score had the Panthers doubling up the Lakers 52-26.
Defensively Bryant Kieft and Ryan Chisek had big games from their LB spots, while Zack Pickens had an interception to lead a DB crew who helped hold the highly touted Glen Lake QB to just 94 yards passing.
Offensively, QB Zack Pickens continued his stellar play. Pickens was 9/11 passing for 245 yards and 3 TD passes. Pickens also rushed 20 times for 141 yards two more TD’s. Senior WR/RB Bryant Kieft was his top target grabbing 3 passes for 182 yards and two TD’s. Kieft had two spectacular TD catches of 99 and 76 yards. Kieft also added two TD runs on the night.
The Panthers (3-0, 0-0) take their high powered attack on the road next week to face the Tigers of Gobles (0-3). Game time is set for 7:00.
