Watervliet High School
Bangor High School
The Watervliet Panthers boys basketball team showed their heart and pride while on the road at Bangor last night. The boys beat the Vikings 70-66 in triple overtime.
The game started out with the Panthers dictating the pace and getting the ball inside to big men Dan Cluster, Sheldon Tobar, and Bryant Kieft. They used their size to lead most of the first half by 10 points, and ultimately took an 8 point lead into halftime.
Coming out of halftime, the Vikings made it clear that we were not going give the Panthers the W. Watervliet would have to go out and TAKE it.
The Vikings battled back to even the game at 44 apiece at the end of regulation.
The first overtime saw a back and forth exchange that led to a 51-51 tie.
The second overtime is where the Panthers were truly tested. Some early turnovers helped Bangor jump to a 6 point lead with about 2:30 left. Watervliet needed a score, and Trent Boone answered by running off a great screen by Dan Cluster, received a great pass from Mark Myers and knocked down a clutch 3 pointer. From that point the Panther got the ball into the paint and took advantage by hitting post moves and getting to the free throw line. After exchanging baskets, the 2nd overtime ended at a 60-60 tie.
The third overtime saw huge baskets by Mark Myers, Sheldon Tobar, and Dan Cluster, as well as huge free throws by Mark and Cameron Rendo, who ultimately hit the game sealing FT.
The Panthers were led in scoring by Sheldon Tobar with 16, Dan Cluster with 13, Cameron Rendo with 10, and Trent Boone with 9.
The Panthers look to keep their momentum going as they take on the Delton-Kellogg Panthers this Friday at the REAL Panther Gymnasium.
