Meet Recap

The girls cross country wrapped up its historic season by finishing 21st at the State Meet. With illness reducing the squad’s strong lead pack from 3 to 2, the already challenging task of going up against the state’s best became even more daunting. The team responded well, however with 4 girls running their fastest times of the season. Taylor Shafer continued to amaze as she attacked from the beginning and knocked 44 seconds off her previous best to finish in 19:47. Her 32nd place was just two spots, and literally 1.5 seconds, from All-State recognition. Gabby Tavolacci brought her great cross career to an end with a solid 20:35, good enough for 84th in the field of 250 runners. Brittney Johnson capped of her own great career in a Watervliet uniform in fine fashion as she ran her best time of the season. Bailey Evans was the 4th Panther across the line posting her fastest time ever of 22:40, while Martha Casiano was just two seconds back from Bailey for her best time of the season. Melissa Swanson ran well but may have been slowed by the sadness of knowing that this was the last time she would ever have to race 5,000 meters before returning to the sprinter’s life for track.
