Meet Recap

The boys cross country team ran their most focused race of the season at Saturday’s Regionals at the torturously difficult Red Bud trail in Buchanan. Going in to the race, the team knew they were amongst the teams fighting for the third place finish and the last qualifying spot for the state meet. As it would turn out, though, the Panther boys surprised everyone with an amazing performance to grab second-place as they easily outpaced third-place Bangor by 26 points. Brendan Daly led the charge as he finished in third place. This was Brendan’s 4th straight year finishing in the top 6 at Regionals. Jobe Kerr embodied the toughness of Panther cross country by willing his body to a 9th place finish before collapsing just beyond the finish line. Reese Jones picked the perfect time to have his best race of the season as he grabbed 15th place to put the team in excellent position for its second-place finish. Team success takes depth, though, and Dominick Tavolacci and Brent Simmons provided that with Dominick’s 20th place and Brent’s 34th place. Haydon Richards and Austin Roberts rounded the day’s great performances. The Watervliet boys are now only the second team in the history of their region to qualify for the state meet five straight seasons.
