The Panther girls raced their way to an impressive start to the 2015 season capturing 2nd place in the Viking Stampede. The eight-team field consisted mainly of larger Division 2 schools including perennial powerhouse St. Joseph who took first overall. A mixture of experienced and brand new runners teamed up to fuel Watervliet’s success. Senior Gabby Tavolacci led the way finishing 9th in 22:40. Freshmen Allie Pazera was close behind in 10th place with 22:54 which was the fastest Freshmen time of the meet. Senior Brittney Johnson crossed the finish line in 17th with 24:08. Newcomers Freshman Vicky Smith and Sophomore Taylor Shafer closed out the team’s scoring finishing in 24th and 28th with times of 25:06 and 25:28, respectively. Junior Bailey Evans was the next Panther in with a 26:20 43rd place finish followed by Senior Melissa Swanson in 61st with 28:32. Senior Aliea Chapin dropped minutes off her time from last year on this course finishing with a 28:56. Junior Emily Wright posted a 30:49 while Freshmen McKenzie Shaffer and Junior Lauren Zabel covered the distance in 38:07 and 38:24.
